.c. to boston today. and plenty of snow in the back end behind it. we use this model to show us where the worst winds will be. what you need to look at is the red arrows. and those red arrows go from the boston area, north into maine, all the way to atlanta. this storm has big snowfall totals, big-time. 20 inches of snow coming down in some locations. and one of those places, williamsburg, iowa, picked up a good, heavy snowstorm and a blizzard. our ginger zee is right there. good morning, ginger. >> sam, we're tried desperately to get to chicago, just couldn't do it. i-80 kept shutting down. you can see why. this is what litters the side of the highway everywhere. trucks, semi-trucks. it was such a rough night and really, this storm isn't quite done with us yet. overnight, the lashing winds and blowing snow stretched from nebraska to michigan. major highways across the midwest, shut down. as drivers struggled to stay on them. believe it or not, this is i-80. look at the long line of cars. just a complete parking lot. we've been here for at least 30 minutes. and we don't know how long we're goin

from spain, some of them with the spanish royal armies; other irish influx arrived from the u.s. for the construction of railroads used to transport sugar cane to the sugar plantations. that was at the end of the 19th century. and then at the beginning of the 20th century, we're talking 1902, 1910, before odono that i mentioned before, this man who gave his name to -- he was very proud of this lighthouse. the cubans offer hospitality to general alexander alejandro o'reilly. he rose through the ranks of the spanish army. the spanish sent alexander o'reilly to cuba to form a militia. he was appointed governor of louisiana and head of the army later on. he arrived in august, 1769, and took formal possession of louisiana for spain. think of new orleans and cuba, in particular havana, governors there were also in cuba so there was all this traveling from one city to another because later when i got my ph.d. from tulaine university and i went to the irish channel. it's interesting, the irish history connected with new orleans. so the o'reilly family has been in louisiana for centuries

the second term agenda of president obama. john harwood joins us now live with all the details. good evening, john. >> reporter: good evening, larry. you know, the house has now passed on a party line vote, zero democrats in favor, about 20 republicans defecting the spending cut portion of john boehner's plan b. it would cut about $200 billion in spending, overt the automatic sequester cuts to defense programs that republicans have been opposed to. now, the debate bef bthe passage of that spending cut bill, and we still have yet to see the passage of the tax increase bill, which is gotten resistance from conservatives, that was an opportunity for both parties to frame the stakes, and eric cantor, the house majority leader, came on the floor and said, this puts the ball squarely in president obama's court. >> we house republicans are taking concrete actions to avoid the fiscal cliff. absent a balanced offer from the president, this is our nation's best option, and senate democrats should take up both of these measures immediately. >> of course, democrats have no intention of doing that. they

of chicago. our nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking the storm for us. what's the latest? >> today was a good day to take off from work if you possibly could. in a lot of areas from the great lakes to the west coast, the wind is howling. the wind is the biggest threat out there. it's going to be this morning in mostly the big cities along i-95. right now winds 39 in philadelphia. 36 in scranton. you have to get in the 50-mile-per-hour range to get damaging winds. that will occur as the sun is coming up this morning around new york city, philadelphia, all of new jersey and then southern new england this afternoon. it's not pretty around chicago with winds at 40 and indianapolis at 40 and areas of snow out here. so it's a very windy day out there. not good for flying. a lot of airline delays. as far as the rain goes, the rain is in green, remember. heavy rain kicking up from philadelphia to new york city through the hudson valley, through scranton and binghamton, new york. that will be over the top of boston this afternoon. the back side of the storm has a lot of snow with it. areas

undercut her credibility right out of the box. i was wonder if you can unpack that for us? >> yeah. i'm afraid this was a political misstep by the democrats, the assault weapons ban while significant to many people, in fact, there isn't any social science evidence that it had any significant effect on crime. and the focus needs to be if you're going to worry about types of weapons that are sold the focus needs be tightly on ammunition capacity not the type of rifle but the number of rounds that it can fire and i think democrats would be well advised to focus on that rather than talking over and over about assault weapons. >> but, you know, paul, we can take the legislative feasibility aside for a second so we can establish the solutions that might work. the reason why assault weapons didn't work you left weapons made before 994 left on the streets. all the high capacity magazines you had out there still perfectly legal if they were made before 1994. isn't the real issue practically speak field goal you're going to do something in terms of legislation have a real impact you need to go
